If a tooth does not heal as expected following root canal treatment, it may be necessary to retreat the root canal. Endodontic retreatment involves removing the old root canal filling material, disinfecting the tooth, and then replacing the old filling material with a new root canal filling material. Typically, a tooth which has had a root canal will last for a lifetime.
